Understanding Gum Disease

Periodontal disease is an infection of the gums and the bone that supports your teeth. It usually starts with plaque—a sticky layer of bacteria—that builds up along and under the gum line. In the early stage, called gingivitis, you may notice red, swollen gums or bleeding while brushing. If not treated, it can turn into periodontitis, where the gums pull away from the teeth, creating pockets that collect bacteria and cause damage to the bone.

The good news is that gum disease can often be managed or even reversed with timely care and regular cleanings.
